St Patrick’s Catholic Parish, Thika

Rt. Rev Phillip Subira Anyolo, Archbishop-Nairobi Archdiocese

Drawing inspiration from the celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God, established by Pope Francis on September 30, 2019 through his Apostolic Letter “Aperuit illis”, St. Patrick Catholic Parish-Thika launched a yearlong celebration of the same event during Family Day Celebrations held on 15th March 2020. The launch was done in a unique style with a Bible procession where members of Catholic Men Associations, Bible Study group among representatives of other Ecclesiastical groups led the procession, where a small girl; hosted up a dummy boat while holding up her bible surrounded by four men with lamps, spears and shield signifying the exalting of the Word of God, while 200 copies of bibles were placed on a stand; where the Cardinal prayed and blessed them. His Eminence John Cardinal Njue urging the Christians to think about the Word, by generally reading the Bible, he reminded them to concentrate on the great value that the Word of God occupies in its daily existence.

I urge all of you to deepen the love we have for the Word of God and realize the benefits that accrue from reading, thinking and living God’s Word in our lives,” he said.

POPE WRITES TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN ROMANIA: BE BEARERS OF HOPE, USE SOCIAL MEDIA WISELY
Pope Francis answers a letter sent to him by young Catholics in the Romanian Diocese of Iasi.

Vatican News

In an open letter addressed to the young people of the Diocese of Iasi, Romania, Pope Francis writes: “Be bearers of hope and builders of bridges, using every tool at your disposal to sow goodness and love in the world.”

The Pope’s words came in response to a letter delivered to him in mid-May by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, who participated in the diocesan youth meeting in Iasi on May 18-19.

Use social media wisely

In his letter published by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Iasi, the Holy Father also encourages the youth to use social networks “with courage and creativity, conveying values that build up: friendship, peace, dialogue between ethnicities and cultures, family, and Christian values.”

He warns them against becoming slaves to their smartphones and ending up trapped in virtual life at the expense of real life: “Go out into the world, meet people, listen to their stories, look into the eyes of your brothers and sisters. True wealth lies in the human relationships lived daily, in direct and sincere contact.”

National Youth Meeting

Finally, the Pope invites the young Catholics to participate in the national youth meeting, which will be held in September in the Brasov district.

“It will be a valuable opportunity to grow together in faith, to share experiences, and to strengthen your Christian journey,” he writes, before concluding with a request to pray for him: “Your spiritual support is an invaluable gift that helps me serve the Church and humanity.”

Word From The Parish Priest

The Catholic Church, founded on the foundation of the 12 Apostles, believes, among other things in Unity, Service and Liturgy. Anything that works to promote especially these three areas is highly applauded, upheld and encouraged by the Church. Unity of her members is so crucial that almost all prayers and especially the Holy Mass keeps praying, like Jesus, “that they may be One” – “One Body one Spirit in Christ” – (cf. John 17:21-23; Eucharistic Prayer III et.al). This is in keeping with the Church’s Creed in which her members profess belief “in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”, which in turn makes her members parts of the One Body of Christ (cf. 1 Cor 12:12-27//).

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church had its early roots in Kalimoni Parish from where it split at the same time with the Catholic Churches at Kilimabogo and Munyu. This was around the year 1933. Its first site was near the Mugumo tree where the Administration Police camp currently sits. The first Church was located where St. David’s School is sited today.
